Adding TAs to Canvas
Instructor Toolkit
You can add a TA to your course from People in the navigation menu at the left. You can also manage Canvas roles and permissions here. You can also remove people from your course if needed.
You will need to know the ASURITE (format: sundevil) or the SIS ID number (format: 0123456789) and select the appropriate radio button for how you’ll identify the person. (The email will work only IF it is the ASURITE based gmail --which is the [email protected] email address. It will not work using any email alias, such as [email protected].)
- Choose People from the left-hand navigation.
- Click +People at the top right.
- Choose how you will identify the person. Select Login ID and enter their ASURite in the pop-up. Or select SIS ID and enter the ID number (format 0123456789).
- Select the appropriate role. (You can change it later.) If your course uses sections and you want to assign this person to a particular section, select that in the dropdown menu.
- Click Next.
- You'll be asked to confirm these are the correct additions. If so, Add Users.
You'll see the pending invitations under People. The pending notice will disappear when accepted:
If you ever need to change the role, you can do that here, by clicking the kebab (stacked three-dots at the right). You can also remove people from your class in the same way.
Summary of Canvas roles This document has an overview of permissions of each role.
Adding Student Roles:
If you need to add someone in a STUDENT role in your Canvas shell, you will need to contact our office. Student roles must be added in PeopleSoft and/or through CES. Students added via Canvas whose information does not sync with the official roster are removed from the Canvas shell each night. If you need to add a student to this term who is finishing an Incomplete from last term, or wish to add someone in a student role in Canvas who is not otherwise receiving credit for the course, our office can assist you.
Email [email protected] with the student's ASURITE and the course's SLN. Ask us to add the student via CES for access to satisfy an incomplete.
